She planted \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003edaffodil bulbs in the yard through seasons of sorrow: after \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emiscarrying babies and losing not one but two of her \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003echildren along with her husband, during the Yellow Fever \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eepidemic. She planted daffodils after each loss, I am sure \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eas a way to honor them — trusting that beauty and life would one day \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003erise again from the dark soil of grief. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNow, every spring, those daffodils return — spreading, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emultiplying, and filling the hills around my \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003egrandmother’s house with light.
